Before starting to dig out for a base to support your walls, which will take the slab and in turn support your oven, you must first decide on the diameter of your cooking hearth.
A good sized domestic Wood-fired oven (for me)...is 90cm. You must now calculate how much insulation and render is going to cover your dome. My oven walls are half a brick deep..4 1/2" (110cm).....then I have thermal blanket...2" (50mm)...then I have 3" (75mm) of vermiculite concrete (vermiculite, cement and water) plus about an inch (25mm) of waterproof concrete.
So...working backwards from your finished oven, your base needs to be big enough to support a 90cm diameter heart + (110cm brick +50mm thermal blanket + 75mm vermacrete + 25mm render x 2)=...900mm + (520mm) =1.4200mm...this would be the minimum width for your base using 90 cm as your hearth diameter. Add an extra 110mm each side if you want brick or stonework to create a housing for your oven.
An extra 300mm should be added to the length to allow for your entrance hearth.
Based on my oven and it's insulation the base should be 1.5m wide and 1.8m long to have a 90cm diameter oven WITH insulation layers.
Here are some pics of the process....
...
some fat guy trying to hide his face....but notice the space left for the insulation layers.
This is how some people get the inside of a Pompeii oven construction to look like....
