Hi I will be starting my pompeii oven soon and I will be using home brew to build. it is there a particular formula that I should use ? Also what sand do I use,Sharp sand or building sand ? While I am here,What do people recommend ? building the dome on top of the hearth or cutting the hearth to fit the dome ? Many thanks Barry

It depends on whether you are going to use portland cement or HAC/CAC as your hydraulic binder. If HAC, I used 123 (1 part portland, 2 parts sand and 3 parts fine grog). If portland, no idea, but someone will be around soon to advise

I used 1:1:1:3 cement:lime:fireclay:sand, I think I used builders sand but can't remember.
I built the dome on top of the firebrick hearth, which is probably quicker and easier, in the grand scheme of things I don't think it makes much difference.

Barry
I've always built my first dome with a half...brick on edge, then laid the hearth inside of this. The outer spaces of the hearth bricks can be awkward cuts but I just use an angle grinder to cut then "near enough" then fill the outer edge with left over homebrew mix.
I found by using the 3:1:1:1 ratio sometimes the homebrew would crack slightly so now I use a 5:1:1:1 ratio of sand, normal opc cement, hydrated lime and powdered fire-clay. I also try to use coarse....but not gritty sand. In S.Wales out builders sad is "dredged sand" which always works well for me.

In case you are please reply as I am very to buy a bit of grog and fire clay to create a crucible with those materials. How ever please notify me on the materials first. thanks.
