Next couple of pictures - brick 'frame' with thermalite blocks followed by a couple of inches of vermicrete. Vermicrete for levelling against bricks more than for insulation but every little helps! Using 25mm calcium silicate board on top before installing the base to the oven. Not far off firing her up! Need to leave vermicrete for a week apparently before installing a modular oven though...

Looking good, wish I could start cooking pizzas - having a few problems with the oven! Question to any mezzo owner - were the 2 pieces of base exactly level when you laid them? I've tried a number of times and I can never get the join of the bases smooth despite using the cal sic board, then trying a bed if mortar under the board for levelling. The spirit level showed the boards were flat, but as you can see from the pics inside there's a 'lip' were the pieces join. Worried if I leave this it'll cause a crack or cause problems. Could it be the base itself that's not level rather than user error? Anyone else seen this? I'm going to have to take the dome off AGAIN... All getting v tedious :-)

Mine has a little bit of a lip/gap, doesn't seem to have caused too many issues so far, knocked 12 pizzas out of it last night My lip seems to be the other way on tho, so when I drag the cold ashes out they catch every now send then but it's no biggie, that said yours looks a little bigger, I'll try get a photo of mine tomorrow Attachments:

Sounds like you're getting the hang of it! That would be great thanks. I mailed stonebake and they said there was little tolerance for the base not to be level - hence my concern.
Have mailed them back with that same pic will let you know what they say..

It's hard to see on the pic as the front is the higher section probably by about 3mm

Thanks for that moggy. Mines probably about 3mm too. Response from stonebake basically said 'it happens' and I could use sand under the base to try and level it out! Not the best but I guess I'm not going to get a perfectly level base if it's the base itself that's uneven... Might have a play around and raise it slightly on one side then just leave it there. I'll be out of summer days at this rate!

I wasn't sure if it was down to my base or not so I've just left it, it's not made any difference of the pizzas and stuff I've cooked...well I don't think it has

Quick question - dome is in place and tiles on. Ready to render. I see some updates saying to leave a gap around the flue when you render. Stonebake advise not to do this as they've not tested this method. Just looking for your views on the benefits of leaving a gap?

Next question if anyone is out there! Pizza oven covers - anyone recommend places that make them to order?

Hi Jon, and Albacore had a post about covers: ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/thread/1988/winter-coat-onthe look of which suggested a yacht cover maker... they seem to be able to shape canvas to both cover the boom and go up the mast and devise the openings to get it on and off. Failing that - and for cheap immediacy - I'm using a green poly 'garden cover' which is a 120cm cube sold for tables... my chimney's low enough for it to go over and still hang down enough. Maybe with yours you could cut a hole for the chimney and gather any spare material around, securing with a bungey to make reasonably watertight? Chas

Thanks for that... Can't believe no one has thought of making covers for these things! It's under a gazebo at the moment but there's some windy weather planned so need to get something sorted asap I think!

Hi all, quick bit of advice needed - my oven is built )but base not rendered etc so no pics yet! However I have a crack in my render on the dome. Has anyone else seen this? I tried repairing but have the same problem now... Not sure you can see from the pics. How would I repair? Thanks! Attachments:

I've got a similar problem, Cobblerdave told me he uses 'silastic' (silcon mastic?) having ground out the crack a bit to have something to gun the stuff into. I haven't done that as I'm going to put a late-addition thickness of vermicrete over the dome and re-render anyway - hopefully the crack will stay inside... I think most of our ovens have cracks someplace, and, as I never tire of posting, it is all relative: Chas
