Hi,
Does anyone know if Travatine tiles would make a suitable base for a Pompeii style oven?
I have loads left over from a bathroom installation and was wondering if it would survive the direct heat from a wood fire.
Many thanks,
Will.

Hello Will.....welcome to the forum. Travertine is a natural Limestone with many flaws within each tile. It's only usually 12 or 13 mm thick so ...at a guess I would say that the travertine would soon crack or spall under the direct heat of the hearth....only my thoughts!!....interesting article on Wiki... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travertine Terry

Im sorry but terry is spot on there, I put some travertine in the bottom of my Bernito oven to try to retain some more heat and it soon broke up.

I concur.......affected by thermal shock and will crack. I used some as a stone in the domestic oven which only gets to about 230 degrees. Fine for a couple of months then boom! If that had been the base of my oven I would not have been pleased
