I have created a base unit for my wood fired oven. The sides are now shuttered ready for pouring a concrete base. Can anyone advise what mix I should use? I have been told a standard 3 aggregate, 2 sand and 1 concrete, will be okay. However, I have also seen sites that suggest adding lime and fire clay. A "definitive" answer would help. I will also be adding insulating board and fire bricks on top of the concrete base. Any help appreciated. Paul.

The standard 3/2/1 mix is all you need for a supporting slab.
Hydrated lime and fireclay are only needed for the homebrew mortar.

Thanks JMS. But what's "Homebrew mortar"?

Thanks JMS. But what's "Homebrew mortar"? Rather than buying fire-mortar to build the oven (which is expensive and sometimes doesn't work well) lots of people including myself made our own fire-mortar. Homebrew Mortar is usually a mix of 4:1:1:1, Sand:Cement:Hydrated Lime:Fireclay. With enough water to make it like crunchy peanut butter consistency.
