Hi Everybody, Just spent the last two weeks reading all this site and i am now total confused!
I am about to start on building a Barrel Vault oven.
The base i am intending is as follows: Dry stone wall outer, concrete block liner
3'x2'x2'' concrete flags 2 layers of plaster board 1 layer of thermolite blocks 1 layer of fire bricks Does that sound OK?
For the vault do l need to use fire bricks ?

Hi richard,
Welcome to the forum. If you use fire bricks, you oven will have a longer life, but it is possible to get away with clay brick or engineering brick. What are you intending to use the oven for? If you want to use it for bread, I would recommend having the hearth a bit thicker than the vault and making sure you have plenty of insulation.

I'm not sure the plaster board adds anything and will soak up any water that gets in the base.
Fire bricks are better than other bricks in terms of mechanical and thermal properties for a wfo but they also relatively expensive. Personally I would choose firebricks if you can afford them and intend on living in the same property for the enxt 5 years and also plan on using the wfo on a regular basis, but its not a clear cut decision.

Trying to add photos In Three days i have dug the foundation and mixed and tipped the cement Built the supporting wall from blocks found on demo site and put in place the 4 flags (day two) Laid two course of bricks fitted 17 no thermolite blocks and mixed and laid 65mm of cement made from the stuff in the bags once i have knocked the oven off may try and build a house (HaHa) theres something about standing back at the end of three days and looking at what you have done Might find some government scheme to re train from being a milkman to a brick layer they say they are desperately short of them. (Ha Ha) Do you think the base is OK? 90mm flag, 100mm thermo block 65mm vermiculite concrete can you see the photos?
