Hello there! I hope to begin building my earth oven soon. I've only just begun thinking about a design, and already have something of a dilemma... do I go for a traditional brick/clay oven or do I follow my heart and try build something along the lines of a kachelofen, or rocket oven? Unfortunately, I'm only really concerned with building something practical, so I doubt it will ever get as fancy as the work of art pictured below... I've already learnt lots here from just one post, and judging by the amount of knowledge here, I look forward to learning lots more. Below, I've included a picture of what I've built so far at the bottom of the garden, and what I've got to work with. It's basically a concrete and mortar ledge, about 2" thick, sat ontop of a dry wood store (the low level cupboard on the right is actually converted from an old washing machine.) On top of the concrete, I aim to cover it with red quarry tiles. I made the roof from some aluminium composite board that I found, and it works a treat! I hope that by joining this site, I will pull my thumb out and think more seriously about designs, and start gathering the stuff to build it. Thus far, I've learned that I can build a basic dry oven with bricks covered in clay/cob. But if I choose a rocket stove design, I'm going to need a metal baking chamber. I did wonder if the baking chamber could be removed from a kitchen oven. Or, indeed, if the entire metal casing from a washing machine/oven might be suitable? Nice to meet you all, regards algo.
