Hi, I'm from Leeds and have signed up to pick your brains! We are just in the process of buying our first house, and one of the criteria we’ve been looking for is space in the garden for a clay oven – which we have now found and are waiting for everything to go through! I’ve always wanted one, and had previously always assumed I’d be making a clay cob oven – until I’d read through all your amazing build threads on here. Now it seems that a clay oven might not be right – we definitely don’t want to build one with a roof structure above it, which may be a problem with Yorkshire’s wet climate! So – am I best to go the brick route? Anyway, thanks for having me Herb

I just had a tarp cover on my clay oven for two three years before I gave it a cover. If that's any help.

I think I wouldn't mind having a tarp over in the winter, but it'd need to look the part during the summer too, so a tarp would be a no go then!
I just need to read up on it more. Don't fancy having to shell out for enough fire bricks to make the whole dome!

Doesn't need to be a tarp, as such: a BBQ or patio table cover like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221660377506will do the job for about a tenner, and will look like a... BBQ or something under cover. A sailmaker could make a made-to-measure canvas one if fabulousness is what you're after. I haven't graduated yet. Chas

if you need some materials for free, I live in rawdon and have some stuff I need to get rid of before we move house. Lots of plastering sand, normal sand, fire clay, few bricks, vermiculite, rebar etc and you can have a look at the oven too if you want.
Needs to be gone before next Thursday

Dunnes, That's very kind of you! Thanks! Every little helps!
I'm not sure I have somewhere to keep it until we move in to the new place. But I'll see if I can get use of my sister's garage, how much room would it take up? I can probably get over to you this the weekend - I only live in Kirkstall.
Your build log is one of the ones that I've read through this weekend - looks good, more of less along the lines of what I want to build. I've been reading through lots of blogs for inspiration!

I have offered it in another thread too as they are in Leeds also. I'll have a look in the Garage tonight and make a list of things and let you know tomorrow. Will be a first come first served I'm afraid.

I'm inspired and sent a photo to my dad (who's a retired builder) warning him what's ahead for him! He's going to have to teach me how to lay bricks I think.
