Hi Everyone
We recently moved house and the garden totally needs a wood/pizza oven - I'm a total foodie and love cooking outdoors so this sort of oven is just the thing for me. I've done a little online research and realise we may have a few problems. Firstly our access into the garden is 1 metre wide at best (and a 30 - 40 metre walk from the road) - so any pre-formed/made oven is out of the question, especially as I am looking at an internal cooking area of at least 90cm, which then brings up my second problem, neither my husband or I am any good at any sort of DIY project, so a self build is also out of the question. I have seen there are some kits available for construction but need to know what sort of experience a workman/builder should have to build it if we go for this option. Also I don't just want an oven that will cook the occasional pizza, I am looking to bake bread, do roasts, slow cook, spit roast etc, etc and all the other wonderful things that can be done so need to know what you would consider the best available oven to get. I know this is a very vague question but as we are looking at a fairly serious investment I need to spend my money wisely so any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, thanks, thanks in advance......

Hi I have put in a modular Stone Bake Oven Co Rocca 90 Model now discontinued, I use it for lots of Roasts, tandoori chicken, ribs, baked salmon on wood , lots of baked dishes and pizzas, its now a way of life, my family would call it my obsession. I intended to build a brick oven from scratch, but for 10 years it was on the "too difficult pile£ so in the end I went for the modular one, I cheated I got guys who work for me to build the table and the oven and flue, delegation has its perks. The base of mine came in 5 pieces and the dome and throat in five again all interlocking all of the pieces were narrower than a metre. You could unpack mine and move it piece by piece in a wheel barrow to your back garden. Each of these pieces could alternatively be carried by two blokes. You will need wheel barrow access for the other sand cement etc. This thread has the details of mine ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/thread/1519/bonjour-guernseyMine is built in an existing lean to green house, I would encourage you to build it under some kind of shelter so you can use it year round and in all weathers as I do. There are many people selling modular ovens from inexpensive £700 is to the more expensive Jamie Oliver, mine is mid range and I bought it from these people in Lymington although I have as yet not visited their show room, it was all done on line and by phone. They have full instructions on how to build them and cook with them: www.thestonebakeovencompany.co.uk/Good luck

The same as you here! Neither of us are. Any good at diy , so we went the cob oven route. Gday True words. Working with natural clay and sand and straw are more natural skills and require just hands and feet not trowels and building skills. (There are a few DIY brick oven builders with mortar burns from the mortar I'm sure.) It can be a communal thing too. With so much clay and stuff to be mixed the more hands make light work. Suits little people as well as, mud pie making skills are instantly transferable to cob making. It would make a great activity to involve children in as I recon they would really enjoy. Recon I would have built a cob oven with my kids if I'd had known when they were younger. Regards dave

There is always the option have having a modular oven lifted over your house into the garden using a local crane company , should typically cost around £150 to do this. Just a thaught !
