Hi Came across this forum whilst researching my build.... so glad I found it! Its great to be able to see other members pictures and read about their trials and tribulations. Ive managed to get my stand built and concrete hearth poured but its taken a good few weeks due to my inexperience, very slow work pace, weather and children!! Having never opened a bag of cement before I hope it all stands up!! I was going to lay another insulating 3" vermiculite & mortar mix on top of the structural concrete layer but after speaking to Liam at Kiln Linings I am now tempted to use Calcium Silicate board or a product called WDS Ultra specialist HT board which is supposed to be up to 5 times more efficient than cal sil at insulating under your cooking floor. Does anyone else have any experience of this product because its a lot more expensive than cal sil?
Cheers
Stephen

Hi there Your base looks great well done excellent with no previous experience . The insulation comes down to your budget really and wat you plan to use the oven for . If you are just doing pizzas then little or no insulation will be needed, if you baking bread or slow roasting meat then you need a good insulator for retaining heat. As I didn't have much to spend I have gone for a thermalite block sandwich in my hearth concrete with some superlux board under my oven floor

Hello Stephen....welcome to the forum. I have used Liam's WDS HT board on one of my Pompeii builds and it works extremely well. This is the link that particular build... ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/thread/1230/pompeii-build-abersychan-wales On many other builds I have taken the same route as my2girls and just used thermolite blocks. Your own budget will decide the choice. I really like your base.Having never opened a bag of cement I touch my forelocks to you!!....fine work. Terry
