Hi im new to the forum and have been investigating how to build a pizza oven, i have come across some 'thermal' blocks in a salvage yard, would they do in place of fire bricks?

Depends what these thermal blocks are.
If someone told me they had thermal blocks I'd assume they meant thermalites, or thermally insulating building blocks, made from aerated concrete. They'd be very light in weight, and not designed for high temperatures.
If they're dense, then they sound like some sort of refractory material, so I'd assume they'd work.
You do also get light weight refractory insulating materials.
As they're in a salvage yard, hopefully they're fire brick alternatives.
If you want a cheaper alternative to fire bricks, you can use clay bricks, which are fired when they're made, just don't use concrete blocks as they'll be damaged by the heat.
