OK so after reading what felt like the entire Internet I eventually got started on my oven. Ive built it on a 100mm+ subbase of crushed rock (dolomite), then a strong 50mm motar mix then 35mm Patio flags. (This I built before reading the entire internet) With Hindsight I would have poured a concrete slab (which probably would have been less work) but hey ho, ill hopefully not live to regret it. The base is built from Concrete blocks, with pres stressed concrete Lintels ontop of this I laid patio flags, then set Aerated blocks on their side for insulation Next it was template time, I didnt have a pair of compasses large enough, so made one Bit of Jigsaw work and a Arch former

remembered to chop it into 3 so I couold get it out again looks about the right size (34") Ahh Herringbone, 63mm thick Firebricks Firebricks cut and laid on a 1:1 Fireclay/Sand Mix As im building out of Red Clay bricks, I thought I would start with a Soldier course, laid them out dry to see if I was heading in the right direction I didnt like the full soldier, so I (after motaring) I knocked them all down, cleaned the bricks, chopped them in half and set them again (live and learn) A IT Tool (Trammel) was made from a castor, lump of wood and a metal bracket, I found the bracket a little fiddly as it would get stuck on the bricks, if I do this again ill just screw 2 pieces of wood together. Layer 2 up And Layer 3, going ok so far, in fact quicker than i expected

and Layer 4 and 5 and 6 so next I removed the Trammel, and propped up a circular piece of timber on whatever I could find Template time again Er ok, something went a bit wrong here aaah thats better, Mk2 placed the template ontop of the wood and filled in the gaps with damp sharp sand to give me the form before I knew it I had a dome, or a hedgehogs house as the kids called it Next I removed the sand form and squashed inside to sort the pointing out.....that was fun......NOT Started on the Outer arch, after building a new template and the back of the Outer arch - Smoke Box

So my next part is to build the chimney, cover/point up the dome and once thats set and dried build some curing fires. I have bought a 1000mm 150mm Flue but still a bit undeceided on how to build/attach it. I also have 50mm of ceramic blanket. Will I also need to put on a layer of Vermiculite ?

Great looking build, as to insulation I think the normal course of events is either blanket or vermicrete, but some have done both. It all depends on the room you have available because in general you can't over insulate a WFO.
Most flue systems have a register/anchor plate which uses the same locking mechanism as is used to join lengths together, maybe an enquiry to your supplier ?

That brickwork and the herringbone is gorgeous! It's such a shame it has to be covered.

Ok I've got the chimney built (pic to follow) I was planning to leave it for a week before I start the curing fires. Should I do these before I add the insulation or after

Logic says dry it out before covering otherwise you'll just be locking in the moisture which will eventually have to come out. I used my oven dome for a year before insulating it; not that I'm recommending that but it does illustrate that your excellent work to date could be put to good use i.e. Pizza !

Where did you buy your ceramic insulation blanket from? I'm fairly local to you (Middlesbrough) and want to buy some. It appears to come in rolls of around 7 metres, when I will probably only use half this.

Hi if you go on Ebay there are boxes of 3.5metes of 50ml or 7 metres of 25 ml insulation I think both boxes were £36.00 plus delivery, but this was the cheapest I could find....Ann
