I like the brick mouth, my next build will have one. As crumbling mouth is a problem with mine.

G'day rivergirl I'm frantically hunting my house for a wood fired oven book that I got when first thought of building my oven. I'm sure I remember that along with the brick arch entrance to improve the durability of the entrance that the writer also included a row of bricks around the base of the dome on the brick hearth. This was again to protect the dome from stray pots, pans, peals and pokers. I built in brick... Sub tropics... And I am a kilometer off the water... No clay heaps of sandy soil. Regards dave

Oh thanks for that! It couldn't hurt! And I have spare refractory bricks in France. Will have to bring them back next trip.

Couple of pics of the finished roof! Hoping to render the base this weekend and then apply the final layer of clay!

Hi there,
Is this forum still alive?
I'm planning to build a clay oven for pizza making in Edinburgh, and I was wondering if anyone would have any tips on where to find clay?
All the best! Morten
