Hi all I am in the process of my build. I am interested in any tips/help that anyone can provide. I would like to use as many recyclable materials as possible; Belfast brick for arch and stand of oven. And have a steel chimney.
Foundations are in. Planning on 36" and see from some threads that suggested opening should be 18".
I would be keen to see if anyone else in N.Ireland has built an oven and have any suggestions.
My first questions : 1) What quantities of mix have been used for the insulated concrete plinth? 2) Can quarry tiles be used as oven floor?
I am sure more questions on the way.

Joan Hello Joan......welcome to the forum. Not sure on your first question. Normally the base walls are built then a concrete slab is cast on top of the walls. Some people use re-enforced concrete lintels and other use heavy slabs. Between this slab and the hearth floor is the insulation layer. I use thermolite blocks (the lightweight blocks used in the internal wall of a cavity wall new build) in this layer...about 10 or 12 are needed for a 36" oven. Some use a layer of vermecrete (fine vermiculite, cement and water...about half a 25 KG bag of cement to a 100ltr bag of vermiculite with enough water added to make a porridge consistency). Another alternative for this layer is the ceramic fibre board...available from refractory suppliers). I have used reclaimed quarry tiles on Clay/Cob oven builds. They work well and the old reclaimed ones are 1" thick and retain the heat and don't crack or spall. If I'm building a Pompeii fire-brick oven I always use (3") fire-bricks for the hearth....laid flat. Terry n.b....on the top of each page are navigation buttons. 3rd from left is the "search" button. I just typed in "N.Ireland" in the first search box and got 6 pages of posts from either people from N.Ireland or ...posts relating to N.Ireland.
