Hi Folks,
I'm in the throws of getting my gear together to build a clay oven (might change my mind about clay yet depending on what I read here). I'm leaning towards clay as our garden is pure clay about a foot below the soil and if I can't be bothered digging; the local sand quarry has a mountain of clay that they don't have a market for on the Island.
I came across this forum as I was searching for this... 'How to waterproof a clay oven?' Our garden is quite exposed and to build a shelter that will withstand the howling winds we get will be very expensive. Up until now my plan has been to build a clay dome oven and then use the dome to form a removable fibreglass water proof cover. I guess that the only downside to this is that the oven will remain exposed to the elements whilst cooling down after use.
Anyway, I'm going to have a good luck at the forum now and hope to keep you up to speed when I do embark on my project.
Cheers,
Shaun

Hi Shaun, I went with clay and have recently completed my insulation layer. I am just about to start on the roof to cover the oven from the elements. I live in Edinburgh and like you we get a fair amount of wind all year round! Just at the weekend it was gusting 40mph! Good luck with your build and if you do decide to go with clay there is plenty of advice available here from the good folks. thread for my build if you are interested. ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/thread/2211/edinburgh-clay-ovenCheers Niall

Hi Niall, I've had a look at your link and it looks great. Your neighbours gazebo looks handy too!!! I'm on leave next week so I'll be taking the kids out when its raining and starting my build when the sun shines I'm going for a timber base, filled with excavated soil as it will be sunk into a bank, some hardcore, sand and maybe bottles. I'm looking for a source of smooth bricks at the moment. Thanks for the reply and link - regards, Shaun
