I am a stranger in a strange land. Having recently purchase a Weber Smokey Mountain BBQ Smoker, 22½" model, I find myself in need of a 'slab' of something that can act as a heat sink. Without boring the pants off you, I need something thin, flat, round/circular, heavy & roughly 480mm diameter or less. The purpose is that the slab will lie between the hot coals and the grill above and form a more stable way of holding/releasing a steady heat flow. I am currently having a slab of mild steel cut at the cost of £40 to try out. Other options have included a 11kg (2cm thick) pizza stone from the USA but the shipping costs made that ridiculously expensive. Then I tried having a granite off-cut (approx 25lbs) fashioned into a circle but that would have cost £72 but would have been a good conductor like the steel. Finally, a US forum friend said, try this UK forum and see if you can make your own clay plate, so Hi, anyone have any expertise or advice that might guide me in this rather odd endeavour? Now that the hello, intro and question are done with, I'll start reading the forum and finally, Hi to everyone Edit : I have tried searching various terms but all I get in reply is an error message saying I cannot connect to the search server - do I need to be 'activated' or something

Gday I have a mini WSM and run a clay saucer from under a pot plant as a heat sink. I foil It to keep clean. Oh don't need a massive heat sink as you only need it to steady the heat flucuations not expend heaps of fuel heating it up. Regards dave
