I now know I only have very limited space so what would be the smallest brick built oven I can get away with

I think you can build 'down' to fit just about anything practical; most self builds I've looked at seem to be around the 90-100cm mark internally, although mine is 32" and works perfectly well. For an igloo type build the walls will be approximately 4" of brick with say a 1" mortar layer, at least 1" of insulating blanket (2" is better) followed by your render coat, say another 1". All told for a 32" brick igloo oven you'll need a footprint of at least 46" using a 1" insulating layer.
I've never built a cob oven but understand that they can be more 'flexible' as the walls are all one material rather than the composite I detailed above.
What are your constraints, size wise ?
