Hi guys, I have signed up here in the hope somebody could help me confirm what is in my back garden.. We purchased a new property recently and it has a half finished what i think is a brick oven in the back garden. There are a load of loose bricks stacked underneath as can be seen and am guessing these would be for completing a roof / chimney of some kind? It has a mosaic slab with a removable iron griddle just above. At the back of the mosaic slab, right across from left to right there is a 1-1.5inch gap, I'm guessing the heat is to come from a fire underneath that would pass through the gap up through to heat the food? That doesn't seem right though as surely it would take ages to cook something that way.. Unless there was a door on it to keep the heat in? As you can see i'm more that a bit confused! because there's nowhere else to really start a fire without losing the cooking space? My good friend thinks this a smoker but I've no idea.. If somebody could confirm a) What type of oven it is, b) what kind of roof it needs to finish that part of it off and c) whether it needs a door of some description across the front i'd be eternally grateful because it would be great to finish it off and put it to use. To the right hand side there which you cant quite see are two brick rectangular footings which im again guessing were to be built up to make some kind of open BBQ but yeah, I'm just guessing there.

G'day The other thing it could be is a Argentinian Parrilla grill. I don't know much about them but they are gaining in popularity. They usually run on wood or charcoal and have height adjustable grills and rotisseries which not on yours due to it not being complete? Regards dave parrillatour.com/whats-the-difference-between-an-asado-and-a-parrilla/looks like it doesn't it

It appears to have no underfloor insulation and a fire inside the chamber will probably make a quick mess of the mosaic floor tiles, so it may not be much use as an oven in its present form. I think your friend is probably right, it's a smoker, particularly with the small entry at floor level in the back. You could contact the previous owner and get a definitive answer and possibly plans.
