just a quick intro before I dig into the contents of this forum and soak up all the knowledge and experience on offer here. My name is Mark and I'm based in NW Leics. We're fortunate enough to own a small piece of woodland a mile from our front door and have been building a roundhouse based on iron age principles with strawbale walls covered in cob and a reciprocal frame roof covered in turf. It's sited to look out over a large pond we dug out some years ago which has proved to be a real wildlife haven.
I'm at the stage where it's time to put some kind of heating system in, we've had a variety of open (outdoor) fire configurations for cooking/socialising and I spent a great deal of time building a fireplace in the roundhouse based on Count Rumford's design using mainly recycled materials and lime instead of cement. It worked and we've had some lovely times sat around the fire of an evening but the reality is that the best built fireplace is never going to more than 20% efficient and, even with our own locally grown firewood, it's an awful waste of a valuable resource, not to mention the impact on the environment.
I've been doing a lot of research on several USA based forums and have decided to trial several iterations of the Rocket Stove both as a mass heater (exhaust running through a cob bench etc ) and for cooking and heating water - lots of projects to get my teeth into :-) I've opted for this approach for several reasons but the main ones are simplicity of build and incredibly low fuel use coupled with up to 90% efficiency - a well built Rocket Stove will have mainly water vapour coming out of the exhaust flue as a result of almost complete combustion of fuel.
I'm now ready to start ordering materials and have discovered the Kiln Linings website run by Liam, (a very helpful person btw.)Is there anybody on this forum who has any contacts for obtaining ceramic fibre heat riser tubes in diameters of 150 and 200 mm ? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading and bye for now, regards Mark
