Home Brew or not for fixing of hearth bricks?

Hi All,

I am going to complete my hearth build today.Can someone please advise if it is best to just lay my bricks directly onto my vermiculite board dry (they are a very snug fit) or, should I fix them down with a scraping of home brew? I have read about both methods.

Best layed dry especially on board as it's very smooth surface. You'll have to contain the outside edge to stop it from spreading. Hob up a ring of mortar on the outer edge of the bricks is all that required. Mines done like that for 6 years now.
