Hi guys!
Looking for some advice, have decided to build a pizza oven in my garden in Worcestershire, using bits n pieces I have lying about. I intend to construct a plinth 1metre square using 12x2inch timber, so it will be about 3 bricks deep. I have plenty of very old, solid , circa 1900 bricks so I intend to place a layer of these in the bottom upon 4x2inch timber joist style system, no mortar just lapping the brick joints onto the4x2's. middle of these three layers will be my insulation layer. I will use the same bricks around the perimeter of this layer then fill withmy insulating material, I have some vermiculite, but what I have doesn't resemble what you guys appear to be using, what I have is very tiny "squashable" particles I believe to be used for gardening fertilization purposes rather than the larger chip particles you find inside a chimney brest, so I'm torn as to whether I should A) use what I have, B)use sand and glass bottles,C)purchase some proper vermiculite chips, or D) use a type of glass gravel I saw at my local builders merchants today, PLEASE IMPART YOUR ADVICE? The top layer will obviously be my cooking surface and again I face the dilemma of weather I use the bricks I already have or should I invest in a few firebrcks?? So on to my plans for the dome and yet more dilemmas. I am contemplating using a terracotta pot for my inner dome, wrapped in that fire blanket insulation stuff (this I will have to purchase)and chicken wire. I will then brick arround this using more of my bricks and heat resistant mortar, and potentially render the whole thing depending on how good/bad my bricklaying skills are and how much mortar I have left over.
So in summary the questions I hope you wonderful people can answer are
1)will heat transfer through my 3 brick layers and burn my timber frame causing catastrophic failure?
2) what insulation should I use in my plinth, how much better is vermiculite compared to sand n glass?
3)are fire bricks imperative or can I get away with decent red bricks for a cooking surface?
4)is a good thick terracotta pot "man enough" for an inner dome?
Please help, photos to follow once I begin my build?
