Hi ! I am thinking about building a relatively small oven about 600 MM. Diameter and about 400 MM high using bricks and mortar covered with a fibre blanket, and then suitable render ! Im thinking about making a dome using paper mache ( quite thick ) ! Do you think this is a good idea ? Many thanks !

Paper mache not too strong or weatherproof. A cement render is a far better and more permanent solution. If you mean making a papier mache dome to lay the bricks against then yes you could do that but it's a lot of work. You can simply build a sand castle in a dome form and lay the bricks against it, but most builders use an IT (indispensable tool) which is a movable arm from the centre of the floor to the inside circumference of the dome.

Hi Andrew and welcome. Do you mean using a papier-mâché dome as a forma over which to build your brick dome? I'm not sure you really need one in this case....most of the builds don't use a forma for this style, they tend to build up one layer at a time. This has the advantage of being able to see the inside of your construction as you go, keeping joints neat. Have a read through some of the build threads for ideas.
