Hello from Magor. I initially found this forum after enjoying a WFO at a rented villa on Mallorca and joined with the intent of building my own. That was in 2008 ... building started a month ago ... better late than never As you can see I'm approaching the top of the stand .. another course or 2 which I'll probably finish next weekend. I intend using a lintel over the opening to support the hearth slab and maybe a second through the centre. With no experience of lintels I could do with a little advice - is something like this from wickes suitably strong to support a 42 inch pompeii and slab - WICKES STEEL REINFORCED CONCRETE LINTEL 100X65X1500MM L04. Also would anyone in my local area, Magor South Wales, be able to point me at a source? Thanks in advance David.

Hi David, Any builders merchants will sell you a lintel like that. I bought one of that size yesterday for just £10. Looking on the map, there's one called Undy Building Supplies in your town. Bear in mind you'll need two to run the full 130mm depth of the blocks you're using. My oven is 36" ID and is unsupported over the base. If you could fit one on the middle, it'd be a wise move, although probably not completely necessary. That said, it'll never be seen and give you some extra security.

Thanks Richie
UBS are indeed my local builders merchants - ordered some from them earlier today which they'll deliver tomorrow. I've definitely gone down the 'extra security' route and will put 3 across the 73 inch back to front span. They'll arrive tomorrow so hope to get the final courses built up & shuttering done ready to lay a 4 inch hearth slab on Sunday.

Actually, fitting a couple of lintels across the middle and putting hardiebacker board on top would dispense with all that frame building and plywood faffing about that takes ages, all for the sake of a few quid.

Too late for the hardiebacker :-( Had a great day with my nephew faffing with lintels and framing - he got to use some power tools :-)

Hearth slab laid - just need to work out what I need for the dome and where to get it from.
