Tandoor oven design questions

I've decided to make a DIY tandoor oven first before I attempt a cob oven. I've got a question which I was hoping someone may be able to answer.

I'm using a rhubarb forcing terracotta pot and a steel drum and I was wondering if I should place the pot with the big or little opening at the top. The big end would be better for access and placing naan breads but I worry it will release too much heat.
