Hi All,
Recently moved into a new house with a large back garden. The previous owner has "kindly" left me with 400+ bricks. (No idea what he was going to use them for but he had built a small BBQ stand simply by stacking the bricks together. My wife didn't like it so I've taken it down and am planning a summer project of building a proper BBQ and pizza oven.
I'm think about using the "gym ball" method to form the dome. Whether I use vermicilite or perlite I'm a bit confused, read different things about both online! Also planning on constructing the plinth out of some 900X600 paving slabs topped with fire bricks. Only concern here is that the heat transfers to the slabs and it cracks. Once the dome is complete add a layer of fibre insulation and chicken wire followed by more bricks. I thinking this should be enough to insulate the outside of the oven. Laid out bricks last night to see how it would all fit together and see where the foundations would need to go.
Any advice or tips would be great!

On another note I've noticed that a lot of people are laying large concrete slabs as a base. Could I just lay normal foundations around where the bricks are planned to be placed?

There are any number of ways to construct a base, from a wheeled trolley and metal tray (mine) to the vast concrete helicopter platforms you have already noted. The only thing in common is that A: they need to support the oven you build, which conservatively may weigh up to 500kgs (as a very rough generalisation), and B: need to provide insulation under the oven. If you are a competent brickie then I'm sure a double brick walled enclosure would be fine, after all that's how houses are built, but it's spanning the gap across the top that causes many to go OTT (that and reading forno bravo).
As to the gym ball, I'd leave it until you get to the point of closing your dome when you have to find a method of supporting the final few courses of bricks. There are other ways, so read a few build threads before mixing muck, and ask lots of questions.

Thanks for the info. Going to make a start soon on the base etc. Going to incorporate a charcoal bbq as well. Picked one up for £7 in B&Q. Bargain!

Just ordered materials for the pizza oven. Completed the bbq at the weekend and fired it up last night. Still needs a bit of a clean up
