I have built the base to my oven and plan to cast a 3-4" reinforced concrete slab topped with a vermiculite or perlite 3-4" concrete slab and then fire bricks finally for hearth. I want insulation but also want heat retention for later slow cooking. Am I making any mistakes.ie verm or perlite ? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks .

You can use either vermiculite or perlite, they're interchangeable. Actually I find a 50/50 mix of both results in a more workable mix than either of the two alone. Try to allow the vermicrete slab to dry for a few weeks, but don't allow rain on it, before building over it and locking in the moisture (see attached doc)

Thanks Dave, I will use that advice. The construction is so permanent, I wouldn't want to have to re do it. Regards Andy

Lived in Woodford Bridge for many years, now domiciled in Devon; sounds like you've made a good start, don't forget to take loads of pics and do a build thread.
