as above really, is it ok to have a few small fires in the dome before insulating,just to cure it a bit.

As per my build thread below, I used my oven extensively for a year before insulating it and adding a flue; I'm not recommending you do this, just pointing out that it is possible. There is a school of thought that says an insulated oven dries out more evenly with less chance of cracking, but my oven hadn't read that bit and so didn't crack. A lot comes down to your own situation, and the opportunity you have for 'oven time'. Whatever you decide, go low and slow for at least seven consecutive days, building up your fires from a few sticks of kindling to the 'gateway to hell' over time. It is important to let the oven cool between firings, as this allows water to migrate from wet to dry areas so it can be driven off in the next fire. Your oven performance will change anyway over the first year of use before stabilising and you get familiar with it.
