cheers guys! I already have some of the garden variety! it just doesn't seem right, what I have is like3-5 mm soft cubes, gold-ish colour, the sort of thing you may use if you had a pet spider. is this the right stuff??, I was expecting a harder material in larger particles or flakes?

Nope, you have the correct material, just in smaller lumps; although I've never tried feeding it to spiders ...
Vermiculite is mined is a more dense form, it is then heat treated to 'puff' it up. The dense form is not much use, but the expanded form is one of the best and safest insulating materials around.
