Hi all,
Exciting times - I put in my order with Kilnlinings yesterday, to be delivered Monday. For anyone who hasn't used them please do, they have been really helpful and I cant fault them.
Two questions if I may though please before I start the dome - Homebrew, I know whats in it and have the mix ratio but any tips on mixing and how long it keeps? I dont have a mixer so will be doing it by hand. Having only done very minimal brick laying before I wont be fast. I assume, dry ingredients first, then add water but to what consistency? I have local building sand if that helps.
Next, I plan on rendering my breeze block hearth shortly with a mix of cement and sand - does anyone have any tips on what ratio I should use and how I should apply it? I cant seem to find many comments about that. Also - whether I need a waterproofing agent (whatever that is!) in the mix to make it waterproof?
Any help on the above, very gratefully received. I'll get some photos up shortly.
Finally - I can recommend manafromdevon for a few basic tips on cooking in a WFO. Did his course last summer!

Mixing homebrew in a barrow is fine. Yes, mix dry first then add water. Because it contains so much clay, it will be quite sticky which really helps. You will quickly learn the correct consistency. The lime in it will act as a retardant giving more working time than a cement only mortar which is also helpful.
Regarding the rendering of your blocks it would be easiest to buy a bag of proprietary cement render. They contain some waterproofing already added which will make the render partially waterproof.
