I have decide to build a Pompeii oven, having read this post - ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/thread/291. I have acquired 100 storage heater bricks and will be using these for the dome as well. For the base i want to use thermolite blocks on top of slabs and then use the storage blocks as the oven base. i will then wrap the dome with a blanket, can i then just render over this. or will it be best to use vermiculite mix before rendering the outside. Thanks

Ultimately it depends on what you want to use the oven for and how much space you have. I rendered directly over blanket covering a dome made from halfbricks; my oven is great for pizza and will do a roast the following day using retained heat. An extra layer of vermiculite (vermicrete) would enable cooking on day three as well, I just didn't have the room.

I don't have the room either, the base will be max 3' x 4'.
