Morning all,
So, I set my thermalites on a thin bed of mortar last night. Not completely level as I am new to all this but thinking I can level firebricks with the fire clay mix. Also surrounding it all with concrete on Saturday so shouldn't move far.
Once I have laid the cooking floor though, do I mortar the soldier course to the oven floor or just sit them on and only apply mortar to the backs of the soldier course?
Secondly, on the subject of expansion, I have read different things. Do I need to leave gaps for instance between the arch and oven. Or between the landing and the oven? Some people seem to leave gaps that get filled with ash and allow for expansion. Or am I just starting to over think all of this!!
Any comments appreciated if someone has a minute.
Andy

Your last sentence is about right ! Yes, you can leave expansion gaps, or heat-breaks but in reality you're cooking a few (dozen) pizzas for friends and will be severely chemically affected (cider is best) by the time you've finished you won't notice or care your heat leaching away !
As to the soldier course, mortar between them and behind them, not underneath them.

Ha, many thanks. You can drive yourself crazy with these home builds, trying to think through everything. Currently stressing about my ability to form arches and design in the chimney now. It never ends!
