Hello everyone, I live I Guernsey and I am having problems sourcing castable refractory cement. Can anyone recommend an outlet? I have built a concrete base and table top, the next stage will be casting the dome over a mould but there is no one selling refractory products over here! Where do you guys buy your cement etc...... Thanks Fox.

Thanks Fox. You could try making your own castable. It is not as good as a proprietary refractory castable, but it is very cheap and it works. Here's the recipe by volume. 3 parts sand, 1 part powdered clay, 1 part hydrated lime, 1 part Portland cement

Hi thanks, yes I have read about home brew, adding stainless steel needles and plastic fibres is said to improve the integrity. The needles hold the mixture when the cement breaks down at high temp & the plastic fibres melt allowing moister to escape during the drying process. However the ones I have see (in pictures) seen to crack and the whole surface looks crazed quite quickly after construction! The problem is I cant get powdered clay or ss needles locally anyway, so I was hoping to find some dense refractory casting mix in the UK and have it shipped to me... I know it is going to cost more for shipping than the product but I am in to deep to back out now LOL.
