Afternoon all. My clay oven is about to start tomorrow (weather permitting). Probably shouldn't have said that!!! Anyway, I've been given bricks from an old storage heater Will they be safe, and also good enough to use for my oven cooking floor? Thank you all in advance. Steve.

Yes, they'll be fine; mine have done sterling service over the last three years, and did so again at the weekend. Do insulate underneath them, I used vermiculite board to give me a flat surface, but other options are available.

Out of interest, can I use Calcuum silicate board underneath the bricks? It would appear to be a lot cheaper than vermiculite. My Mrs will go mental on me if I spend too much on this little folley of mine. :-)

Yes, Calsil board is an excellent insulator. Ideally use a thickness of 50mm or over.
