Hi All I have just started our build after lurking on the forum for i have just started our work. This should include a Gas BBQ, Pompeii oven, single hob, and sink. I was going to build a charcoal BBQ also but have found a large gas one which you can remove the burners and inset a charcoal tray so will be doing this instead. A few pictures of how it is so far. we started this Friday and hope to start the block-work at the weekend weather dependant

I will be doing the first coarse of brickwork with engineering bricks and then putting another layer of damp coarse and another slab just to prevent rising damp getting to the storage of wood hopefully. i will update as i go.
Please feel free to move this if it is in the wrong place.
cheers

Hi all. I got out and set up a test layout and all seemed fine. I Have stuck my old BBQ on the slab temporary as we had such nice weather we had to use it. I have got the blockwork filled with concrete and rebar and just waiting to do the slab now. I Have purchased 8x2 joist which fill form my frame for the slab fixed through the block work with studding. The weather is not on my side now though as i wanted to pour the slab on friday evening due to having other jobs to do saturday. It looks like i will be doing the slab saturday now instead and putting other work on hold. I did have a 3m pop up gazebo but like usual you lend things to people and forget so that has vanished.

I still have to put the front of the opening in which again the weather has caused me issues. I will also put a 10mm thick steel plate at the front for extra support on the front corner

crammy. Looking good. A lot of work going on there. Keep the pictures coming. Have you thought of a canopy or gazebo over that. You will need something if you intend to cook through winter & rainy days. My oven is only 4 paces away from my French doors & covered. Took this picture on holiday, a big wow, would love one of these.

Thanks devontiger. we did plan to have a gazebo/cover similar to yours but it would interfere with our sun. In the summer, if is is raining i will try and find our pop up gazebo just for shelter while cooking. As i work with steel i will fabricate and galvanise something for the winter that can be erected and left up for maybe 6 months of the year and then collapsed and stored away. Our BBQ and single hob has arrived and perhaps i should of paid attention to the dimensions. i didn't realise how big it actually would be. They Didn't send my cast iron griddle which should be here friday for it, and i forgot to order the charcoal tray. That grill is enormous Devontiger. I dont think i would have the friends to fill it HAHA, well atleast until the oven is finished.

We do get the sun over on the south east side occasionally hahaha. We are over in essex.
In regards to the onions dropping through, i had ordered a 2 sided griddle for the bbq for onions, eggs, mushrooms etc but they took my money and never shipped it out. i contacted them and they told me it wasnt in stock. you just remove one of the sections of grill and place the griddle in.

got a bit more done this evening as the rain held off. All i need to do tomorrow if it doesn't rain (don't fancy welding in the rain) is weld the re-bars in when i bring the rest home from work, and put a couple of stacks of bricks and plate under the front to support the wood and i'm ready to roll. The slab should be poured saturday and hopefully my fire bricks etc will be here Wednesday ready for next weekend

Morning,
Have you added any insulation between the hearth slab and the oven? If not, think the heat from the oven will bleed into the concrete? You can use vermicrete but I opted for lightweight blocks in the end as its less hassle and you dont have to wait for the vermicrete to dry. Only about £1 each. I used about 20, laid out to the same size as the oven and then poured a second slab of normal concrete around them up to their level.

Hi mate. I need to update my build with pictures which i will hopefully do at the weekend. Im only 4 courses of brick high at the minute. I made a balls up with the arch so have to try and sort that this weekend. I have the slab above which is about 4.5 inches thick. I then built a wooden frame on top of this and poured another 50mm concrete leaving a 50mm pocket for me to drop a sheet of ceramic fibre board in. I was going to use lightweight blocks that i had but when i tried the blow torch test that i had seen they started glowing so i assumed that they were not the blocks people use. as i hadnt order the bricks yet i just ordered a fireboard. I also have 100mm of fire blanket for the dome which i'm assuming is far to much so may only use 50mm.
