Hi all,
I've been trawling the web and YouTube for months, looking at DIY build and eager to get started.
First question, I will continue to look on this forum, but is there a thread that discusses dome vs barrel shape?
Thanks,

I immediately found a short mention of vault style being negative in many ways, so already leaning towards a dome... Maybe ignore my previous question, unless there is a substantial discussion thread someone can point me at.
Thanks

Hi rik77, some people like barrel type, its all to do with what you want. If you go Dome shape have the chimney forward off the center of dome. That is where a lot of your heat goes. I have a Dome oven, pre built supplied as is, & the chimney is center of dome. One needs to insulate more to keep heat in. Other that that wood ovens are fantastic fun. You still keep learning.

Depends what you want to cook in it too. I think barrels are easier to build but dont cook as efficiently. Great for pizzas, quick cooks and bread etc but the domes are more efficient because they dont suffer from cold spots in the corners like barrels do. Having said that, if you made a barrel from fire brick and covered it with enough insulation you could still probable slow roast and do other things in it. Maybe your cool down times would just be a bit shorter than a dome.
Thats just my opinion. I have a dome. The domes are trickier to build but a better all rounder I think.
Hope this helps.
