Hi So I have built the inner arch and im up to 5th layer of brick. The joints on the in side of the dome are getting bigger and Im going to start cut the bricks to reduce this. Is it necessary to pointing/ fill the joints on the inside of the dome & is the usual 3:1:1:1 mortar mix ok for the inside of the dome. Thanks Sam

While it is perfectly possible to point the joints it's a lot easier to trim the bricks to reduce the gaps in the first place. Pointing, if it fails will only end up in your dinner, which is less than desirable; but 3-1-1-1 will do fine if you go down this route.

As obeltone says, you don't want big gaps in your oven filled with cement. Try & trim a little more, as everything will expand & contract as it gets hot then cold. Have a look at this picture, looks about right to me. Of course if you spend the time you can get them closer together, but I would think this to be a good compromise.

Thats great thanks for the reply's. I'm on layer 6 and have started cutting the block. Non of the gaps on my oven is bigger than 8mm to nothing. So it should be fine then I reckon.

Because the mortar joints are always bigger on the outside, some builders advocate having 0 thickness on the inside so no join is seen on the inside. This makes internal clean up far easier and leaves less mortar exposed on the inside.
