Hi I will be casting my dome with 1 layer of homebrew followed by a waterproof Render, then possibly mosaic tiles. Can anyone advise what thickness was each layer should be?
Thanks simwilli

Hi I will be casting my dome with 1 layer of homebrew followed by a waterproof Render, then possibly mosaic tiles. Can anyone advise what thickness was each layer should be? Thanks simwilli Most cast ovens have an inner dome of 2” thickness. This provides sufficient strength and thermal mass. You can add stainless steel needles if you want to add additional strength. Is there a reason that you want to waterproof the inner dome before insulating it? A waterproofing render there will prevent moisture from getting in from the outside, but will also prevent moisture from getting out. The more usual procedure is to eliminate the water after insulating, then make the outer rendered shell and finally add a waterproof coating over that. If you are doing the insulation layer in 10:1 vermicrete only, then it should be 4” thick. Remember that the more cement you use in the mix the more you reduce the insulation value.
