Hi, I’m Neil and live in Edale in the Peak District. Last night I dug out for a base ready to build my oven. Whilst looking for tips and advice, I came across this forum.so here I am ready to learn. Wish me luck!!

What is the basic plan ? Clay dome, reclaimed brick, geometrically perfect firebrick ... I’m Mr Geometrically Perfect Firebrick (in theory anyway) - I intend to construct a 1.0m internal diameter oven. I have a list of things I need confirming regarding build dimensions. - Width & height of door opening (Have I seen 63% as max door height vs dome height?)
- Thickness & type of insulation beneath firebrick base/hearth
- Ideal height of hearth (we are both 5’-9”)
Thanks in anticipation!!

I've just been doodling on Autocad to try & establish some answers of my own. With a door height of 315mm I think a 1200mm high hearth level will work.

Your oven floor should be at elbow height of the user, so get the tape measure and your wife and start measuring. The 63% door/dome height is the optimum, but a little either way won't hurt.
Your autocad man is going to get a burnt face, see above.
With regards to insulation, you can't have too much but you need to be sensible and it will depend on what you use. I suspect you're looking at a loose-fill layer as you have an irregular hole to fill so I'd suggest at least 4" of vermicrete under your floor bricks.

the top of cooking surface on mine is 1060mm from finished floor level, which as stated above works out to be elbow height for me. I at first thought this was too low and wanted it higher but i'm glad i never.
