Hi. I am new to this forum and new to the world of wood fired ovens. Having looked on various forums and done some research I hope to start building an oven when the weather improves, hopefully soon!! My first question, can a wood fired oven suitable for cooking bread and pizzas be built using steel? The reason I ask is, I have a large steel cylindrical tank with domed ends built from about 6mm plate, the tank is approx one metre diameter and about two metres long. I planned to cut the tank in half and use just one half as my oven. I could then weld a 10 or 12 mm steel plate in the base to form the floor of the oven. A hole for the chimney and the door could be cut out as required. The cutting and welding would not be a problem as I have access to all that sort of kit. The whole structure could then be set on a bed of firebricks, and then surrounded by bricks and something like vemiculite to retain the heat. Probably sounds crazy but I would welcome all comments. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
I don't see any cooking problems with a metal lined wfo, though you are likely to need some thermal mass to bake bake but you seem to be aware of that.
Structurally, there may be an issue given that the steel sheet is quite thick, as the expansion and contraction might affect any sort of cemented brickwork thermal mass layer in contact with the steel liner. This would probably be less of an issue with a 'thin' steel drum type liner. I'm just guessing here. the hot waste gases are likely to be quite corrosive but I've no real idea whether this would eb a problem for a domestic use wfo.
We have at least one person who's used a thin steel drum liner, hopefully they will see this thread and share their experiences.
Good luck

Hello Fenlander.....welcome to the forum. As Tony posted, we have at least one ongoing build using a drum. And we had at least 3 on the old forum. If you type a few keywords into the "search" facility (at the top of the page) you may be directed to that particular build. Also try the search facility on the old forum... woodovenukforum.forumup.co.uk/index.php?mforum=woodovenukforum Terry
