Hi all I’m new to this but desperate to get on and get a wood fired oven to replace the gas bbq that has finally died a death.
Looking for something more barrel shaped than pizza shaped, will be doing more general cooking than pizzas I suspect. And it will fit the patio less intrusively!
Was thinking of building one from scratch but seems like that will be fairly expensive and take a while, so now aiming towards a Linea VZ barrel oven or one of the more expensive Vitcas Casa double ovens.
Great to hear anyone’s experience of either of these, will post on a more sensible spot.
Anyway great to be aboard and looking forward to learning from you all.
Will

That’s a well documented build, but it fails to document any steel bracing of the vault or end walls. As a hemispherical dome is self supporting it does not require bracing, but a barrel oven does, particularly as the radius of the vault gets bigger and the side thrust gets greater. The continual expansion and contraction will work on any inherent structural instability.

Thanks for your replies. In the end...i bought the LInea VS barrel oven rather than using my ever short time to do something proper.
The brickwork is more or less up, i am going to seat it on thermalite blocks on their side (does this sound ok?)
Then for the render - seem to be a million different posts on this. I will be covering it in the aluminium backed insulation blanket. I can’t understand whether i need breathable render then waterproofed (which seems to defeat the object of waterproof render?) or can simply render over the blanket with ordinary Portland cement render as presumably the blanket will provide a heat break?
Thanks everyone.

Well a good decision there. But as always, we will need pictures. Yes, right from the start to the end. (even the gory bits)
At least this way you'll be ready for the spring/summer.

Here the brickwork was last night - now up to height and pointed. Ready for the gravel boards then thermal lite blocks, and finally the oven.
...although i cant seem to add the image. Ill upload a series when i can.

A sweet little oven! Let us know how it performs when finished.
Always interesting to compare performance of a barrel oven to a dome.
