Hi all,
Got a question and its probably been asked a few times before. I have had a search and now have even more info that adds to the confusion
So what would you all recommend for a base?
My space
Worktop height is currently going to be 800mm due to it been against a retaining wall. Now i find tbis way too low for a pizza oven.
So i have a concrete worktop 40mm thick at a height of 800mm that the oven will sit on. In an ideal world i want it a fair bit higher (elbow hight) so i have room to build an insulated layer before the fire bricks.

Not quite clear whether you mean build up the worktop or build up the base. If the base then concrete block, but if as I think you mean you’re trying to raise the level of an existing worktop then Thermolite blocks laid on their side? Cheap and you can build two layers if you want. They’ll be insulating too
Or I suppose you can pour a vermicrete slab on top of the existing worktop.
Pics of what you’re working with would help clarify.

Hi Truckcab, thanks for taking the time to reply I did think that was not best explained I will need to build up the base, worktop will be built to the height of 800mm built with 6inch block then a 40mm slab. i think i need to have the pizza oven floor at 110cm for my height 180cm so this leaves me with 300mm to make up including pizza oven floor. if require more of an insulating layer i can afford to change plans as i start to build next week. guy in my street put his on a concrete slab and he cant use the oven in the winter months as the heat is just sucked out. Apologises for my rather shocking 5year old drawing but short notice and back on shift tomorrow So this is the area i am working with My very bad drawing, hope that helps, if not i will knock a wee drawing at work Current work top

So if I understand correctly you need to add height so that your pizza oven floor sits 300mm above the 800mm base.
I’d be inclined to work backwards from the pizza oven floor bricks and your chosen underfloor insulation and add whatever extra you need to the base floor level so that the wood store under your pizza oven (where you’ve drawn the arch) is raised above surrounding floor level.
However if you’d rather not, and you want to add lots of insulation under the pizza oven floor then you could raise it up with thermalites on their side.
Taking your 800mm starting point you could add.
10mm mortar bed 100mm thermalite (on it’s side) 10mm mortar bed 100mm thermalite (on it’s side) 10mm bed for oven floor bricks 64mm refractory brick for oven floor
Total 294mm

Top choice of oven. Exactly what I have. You’ll be really impressed with it.
For the build I’d just use concrete blocks. You can use thermalites but I’d prefer something stronger myself. High density concrete blocks. Easy to cut.
Why not just follow the pizza oven supplies plans. Mine is built to them and the floor sits at 1150mm. And I started one brick up, so take 64mm off that and you’re more or less where you want to be. If you want more insulation than they spec, let’s say a 100mm vermicrete slab, just cut the last block down by the same amount.
You can download the plans from their site or if not I can send them to you on Dropbox or wetransfer.
My build is on here under modular ovens if you haven’t already seen it. If you ignore the brick cladding, the block, lintels and slabs bit is what you need.

And I’ve also not seen the need for more insulation than is provided by the base that they provide under the refractory bricks. My oven is over 100 degs well over 24hrs later. More can’t hurt though obviously.

I seen your build, the brick work again is very tidy. could you send me the plans via dropbox that would be great and your probably right and just stick with what they say and cant go wrong and if its still warm after 24hrs that will do me.
