I found this forum as I thought about building vs buying an oven. Lots of ovens on ebay for £400/500, they must be rubbish right? I don't think i have the skills to build an oven so my question is how much would an "ok" oven set me back? and any recommendations? I'm not after the rolls royce here.. just something that does the job. Or have i got it wrong and economy of scale with someone like www.woodfired-pizza-oven.co.uk/supreme-wood-fired-pizza-oven-white-with-black-door-90cm---120cm-581-p.asp/ are actually ok for the money?

I think most are probably fine for the money. Relatively rough construction. Not the most efficient insulation and they’re built to a price. However for the money they appear to be an excellent and cost effective way to get started. I nearly went for one before I built my own around the modular kit from Pizza Oven Supplies. Only reason I didn’t was that I couldn’t get access through my property for the size I wanted.
You could spend £400 on a decent oven and then knock up a base in block work for not much money, or go for a sleeper base.
There is a big difference between these and the build yourself versions. Buying my modular oven ‘kit’ was £1,300 if I recall, and I probably spent in the region of £2k or more in total to complete it. Allow a lot more if you have to pay someone else to build it for you.
If it was a choice between one of those or not being able to afford a ‘proper’ oven I’d go for one in a heartbeat. You could be up and running in a day.
