Hello everyone, Just built an oven and coated the inside with AA fire clay and as it has dried i have ended up with horrendous cracks all over it. How do I go about fixing it? You don’t say how thick the applied coating was or why you did it. Brick ovens are usually not coated on the interior, likewise castable refractory. A thin coating of any material is prone to cracking or flaking. Clay is particularly bad because of its high shrinkage. To reduce this a mix of equal parts by volume of clay, fine sand and hydrated lime would be a better candidate but should be applied to a damp surface. Too dry and it won’t hydrate properly, likewise too wet doesn’t work either.
