So I couldnt find anyone to borrow a mortar rake from so rather than buying one ended up using the angle grinder to chase out the cracks as below. This meant in a couple of places they were a bit deep and thin but this just meant taking a bit more time filling them Attachments:

And then mixed up a small amount of slightly wetter K Rend to get into the bottom of the deeper cracks and then left to dry in the weekends sun for 4 hours. I then mixed a normal mix of K rend to finish off filling the cracks. The K Rend i still find really user friendly as with this last stage I mixed more than i needed to fill the cracks and then allowed it to dry off and covered the K Rend remaining in the tub so it didnt dry out. After the final covering had hardened, I added more water to the K Rend in the tub and then simply used a 4 inch paint brush to give the whole top of the oven a once over to even up the colouring.
