There is no way a user is able to copy an entire thread from one forum to another, so here is a quick guide to how to do it manually. It’s fairly straightforward and a typical build thread will take 30 mins to an hour to copy 50 posts.
Part 1 – Preparation of new thread
1. Login to the old forum and open your thread at page 1
2. Open a new tab, login to the new forum, select the appropriate subject (eg 'Pompeii Ovens' under 'oven builds 2012') and open a new thread to create your first post (subsequent posts are created using the reply button )
3. Take a couple of minutes to familiarise yourself with the new features, they are familiar but more comprehensive
Part 2 – Copying a post (3 methods)
If your post contains no images or smileys
1. In the old thread, highlight the text of your post with your mouse and right-click/copy
2. Go to the new thread, click reply and paste the text into the message box, adding a subject if required
3. Post
If your post contains images or smileys
1. In the old thread, click the edit button , top-right of the post, now highlight and right-click/copy the contents of the message box
2. Go to the new thread, click reply and paste the text into the message box, adding a subject if required
3. Post
If the post is from another user and you want to preserve it
1. In the old thread, click the quote button , top right of the post, now highlight and right-click/copy the contents of the message box
2. Go to the new thread, click reply and paste the text into the message box, adding a subject if required
3. Edit the post, removing the =”username” from the first tag (you may also want to add something to identify the commenter if they have not signed it)
4. Post
It’s a fairly quick process once you start. I rearranged my posts slightly so that I could incorporate my responses to comments into the same post as the user’s comment.
If you make a mistake you can simply edit the post to fix it. You may find that some smileys use different codes, so edit as necessary. But the good thing is that the code works the same way so you don’t need to re-upload hosted images.
