Well I've permission from my wife and am building the perspex roof then raised floor in an outdoor cooking/relaxation/beer and wine area, next to my house. Will be looking to add a WFO and an open fire place. Two questions before I start: Does the front of the oven have to face the wind, as although it is outside it will be quite protected from the wind but I could rotate and move the oven position if this is important! Also the smoke from the flues? My neighbours are cool and know about my little project but will the smoke be a BIG problem. I've given myself until March 2013 to complete and will post pics and more questions later, thanks in advance.

welcome aboard Jez.
You do not need and I suspect want wind to hit the oven mouth, the heat going up the flue will create a draw so it will activly suck air in.
As for smoke, when the wood is burning well there should be minimal to no smoke at all, when there is smoke that is effectivly wasted fuel going out the chimney. A damp oven fresh from construction is likly to not heat up as much and may be more smoky but when finnished it should not be too bad at all. Like most things they can be said to improve with age.
You acn try to minimise the smoke, first is to use an extra heat source or forced air for the initial lighting to get a complete burn to reduce smoke, and the dryer the wood the less likly there is for smoke anyhow. Chop the wood to thinner lumps and this again will aid thier burn and reduce the chance of smoke.
a well made dry oven with good quality well seasond wood should be less smokey than a bbq, you can always further "kiln dry" wood after you have finnished cooking ready for the next firing.

Hi Welcome the lads & lasses on here are very helpfull and resoursfull and still keeping me informed as i am still a WFO virging in progress. You mentioned that you have neighbours and want to also have a open fire place . As per complements to MISS Harney re: her 1987 Airpolution Act ( Ireland) you wont be able to burn non smokeless fuel in your open fire place . Presume the fire place is for heat and comfort and if so if your in a city you have to check if they comply with this act . If so you can only burn smokeless fuel . Although that acts been around for some time some cities only prescribed to it in the 2000 . And if your local legitimate fuel supplier sell s it re open fire place then it can be burned re heating becuase the ACT comes down hard on the fuel supplier if he is selling the wrong stuff re smokeless ban. The smoke fuel is more aimed at coal type of fuels trhat let off a very dark thick smoke . And I think the likes of Dunnes stores and Superquinn wont be selling charcoal and BBQ if you cant make BBQ fires etc . So my understanding is that its only for heating that might fall under your outside open fire place if you burning non approved fuel if in a city surrounding re heating ? I live in the country side so this doesn't apply to me. But i was always wondering when BBQ when i still lived in the city . But if its more Cooking food on most likely you will be using wood etc so shouldnt be a problem flu is always a good idea . ANd like turkey said dry cured wood is better . Goodluck with the build

we have smoke control rules here, I would check how this affects outside space , in the UK if the oven / fire is outside and not under a roof then its exempt from the smoke control. Having a roof may well affect this plan, as that may class the build to be "inside". I would check with the local enviromental agency, I found them quite helpful once they understood what I ment by pizza oven

Pizza oven isnt in the bad category. Just saying to Welshman that he must be carefull what he is burning in the outside open fire place presuming for heat if he is in the confines or surounding areas of a city in Ireland. He will know who Mary Harney is if he has been in Ireland for some time . She was the prevoise health minster before the last Government went .
The smokeless fuel is more related to types of coal and "dirty fuels" Thats why you sometimes see smokeless coal etc . Dont worry to much but just saying be carefull of what you burn in the open fireplace . As not to attract attention

Thanks for the feedback, I have been in contact with Dineen Sales a while back as I live in Kildare not far from them and will be using them to supply my oven dome etc.
We live in a rural area and have an open fire so no problem there, it was more the smoke from the WFO (maybe the smell of cooking might mask it anyway) that was unknown.
I work part time for B&Q so 20% off anything there plus I'm a Civil Engineer that likes to build things I think it's only the weather holding me back!!!
Will keep you posted on progress!
