I've always wanted to try putting mosaics on the dome of an oven......Rivergirl has a fine example on her oven...... Haven't yet laid mosaics on an oven yet, but made a trial run on my kitchen floor on the weekend with off-cuts from a recent job using Travertine stone.......(borrowed a decent tile cutter to cut the off cuts into managable shards..... Lesley You are a true Trojan. After carrying all those walnut planks from France to the Bristol "Grillstock" event, just to give away to us lucky few, I wouldn't impose on you to bring china to the Welsh. I am however thinking of doing something with my first oven build. As this was my first attempt (and guesstimate) ...I know now what I didn't know then, so due to lack of insulation in the correct places ....a re-build of a Clay oven on the same base is long overdue. I would love to stencil a Welsh Dragon on the curved base and then make a mosaic of the base. I will still have the option then of a clay re-build on top of this base. Terry

there was a fantastic build on google ( many years ago but it should still be floating around ) of a dragon the body and tail being a bench and the head the oven , that was my dream BUT the reality of lugging all the clay over the river so I am happy with Bert !!!.......... can you not just give yours a clay coat ? for Berts I was going to cut the bottom of bottles and sort of turn him into a turtle , was thinking that maybe the bottles would also provide insulation ......................... No probs about lugging the china over if you want it as we are going up to St Ishmaels for the week in September .

Wooo - that floor looks the bees knees ;D
As far as a stencil of the Welsh dragon goes, if you find a graphic, you could blow it up and print it out at A4 at home - or larger at a printers. Cut out the dragon, and voila - one stencil. I'll see if I can rustle something up, if you'd like?

H...... What do you mean....if you like. If you could russle up something or tell me how to make a stencil, I would be forever in your dept. Just nipped out and took a pic of my first......and sadly neglected oven... .....Rivergirl's walnut plank is covering a large hole! So H.....just in case you can do anything for me I just measured the round base which is 55cm high(to the underside of the brick surround)and 2.35cm from left hand side to the brick pillar. I think the original pompeii will be demolished and a clay oven will take it's place. Terry

love the hallway, this is the same pattern (with slight colour variations) that I have on my doorstep and should have as a path, someone decided to pave over it with pink and yellow slabs (yuk) and I would love to get the original look back but the costs I was seeing for just the tiles was silly money.

Although the job looked the bees knees, I agree that the price for new mosaics is quite steep. The mosaics were bought from "London Mosaics @ £500 per meter sq. There was 1 1/2 m2.
If you wanted to remove the slabs and bring back the mosaics to former glory, there are quite a few cleaning products now available on the market. Soaps sometimes are better than acid's. I recently cleaned a similar area of mosaics but used a liquid soap of a PH value of 14 to bring back the colours.

I had an encaustic tile hall , i loved it , a bit of linseed oil and it came up a treat ! the mosaic dragon is a brilliant idea , are you doing it with tiles or broken crockery ?

HI Terry, I think looking at the level the slabs are at they must have ripped up the mosaic to fit them we do still have some tiles on the doorstep, what is this magic soap? I might have to make do by just cleaning the step nicely and changing the path to something less vulgar, 1.5K is a bit steep for a path.

It will probably done with offcuts from other jobs. I would love to buy in some mosaics, but .....you know me.....I'm always playing "catch up" with bills etc, so free off cuts are order of the day.
Turkey.
When i cleaned the last existing mosaic project, I used industrial "washing up liquid".....PH neutral (water) has a value of 7....the soap I used had a PH value of 14. Anything less than 7 is an acid....anything above 7 is a soap.....It sounds like your mosaic porch may need an acid. A simple brick acid from a builders merchants will do the job......method....wet the mosaics first, then apply the brick acid......wait till it stops bubbling, then scrub off with clean water. Leave to dry then apply a stone sealer.
Terry
p.s....we buy our detergents and acids from a local Industrial cleaner shop. They mostly deal with contractors, but also deal with Joe public.
pps.....any soaps or acids more than =+1 digit from above or below 7.....need to be given the same respect of strong acid.
