What a tragic story. Very worrying also as many of our members have used old oil drums in the construction of a wood-fired oven.....more worrying for all the BBQ/Smokin guys as these converted oil drums seem to be very popular when trying to build a Weber style grill.

that really is bad news,
sounds like filling and then emptying to remove gas and any left over combustible material would be essential.
be safe folks.

That is awful, what a tragedy, I always rinse mine out thoroughly before using and try to get food grade ones if possible, and encourage others to do the same. Cheers Marcus

My brother welds petrol tanks for his banger racers from old gas bottles/jerry cans. Trick he uses is to fill with water and leave over night then in the morning while still full hold a match over the entrance to be sure you've burnt off any remaining fumes. Then empty and crack on.
Got to be careful with oil drums, they could have had anything in them plus it would need a lot of water to fill up!
Becareful indeed.

Good practical advice PistolPete.
A lad I went to school with died after working on his motorcycle in a garage and lit a cigarette - boom - goodbye.

Its never too late for H&S, I once used an old wooden chair in my WFO but one of my pizzas ended up with a small nail in it, it must have remained between the base brick joint and then stuck to the raw pizza and remained there when baked. only use logs from then on.
