....................however, having read about the bewildering amount of designs and pitfalls etc I can see the planning is going to take much longer than I thought. Cardiff resident hoping to build one friend of mine is having his overnight storage heaters taken out in a few weeks - presumably it would be a good idea to "reclaim" the bricks inside? cheers!

I built my entire dome with storage heater bricks, but you're likely to have just enough for your floor with the bricks you can reclaim. Still well worth liberating them for a second life Oh and welcome to the forum!

It can seem a little daunting but it isn't. We tend to 'discuss' lots of things that may or may not have a material impact of the final design (because we like to ). 1 Decide what you (mostly) want to cook. 2 Decide on a size (site restriction) 3 Decide whether you want to self-build or put a modular together 4 Build it! Ok maybe its a little more than that but we are here to help you. Good luck.

welcome aboard :-)
just to add to what Tony said, we discuss many parts and there a fair few different designs but you pretty much need those points answered before worrying about details. Each other part of the final design can be discussed and decided upon, its not that complicated when you break each part down.
it can be as easy or as hard as you want, from a simple practically un insulated clay oven on the floor to a massive stand and a brick oven capable of retaining heat overnight.

Hello H12.......welcome to the forum.
Best of luck with your build and.....keep shouting out if you're in doubt.
I'm only 12 miles away so can rope me in to any awkward stages of your build......if you want.

Thanks all for the welcome..................good to know that the forum is quite "active" and therefore likely to be a good source of ongoing support should I decide to take the plunge. And thank you Terry, it may well be I shall call upon you at some point even if its for a cuppa over at the 'Port to see your oven and get some pointers ;D I started with the intention of having an oven for just pizza but the more I think about it the more I'd like to do bread and even the overnight/ long day roast thing so I guess that's where I'll be headed. I only have a small space in the garden and so wont be looking to build a "monument" (like some that I've seen on the web in the USA) Hmmmmm, lots more reading/research first though methinks !

R2D2.......your last comment is the best advice which we can give....
"Hmmmmm, lots more reading/research first though methinks !"
There are loads of options from building your own Pompeii to buying a Modular (kit form oven).....or build a simple base of timber or masonry and create a Cob/Clay oven......The latter won't cost an arm or a leg as a turf supplier on Lambey way/Oceans way (the Lighthouse Road)....sells clay at £12 per ton.
Take your time and do your research.....if you go for it....please share your build with us.
