Hi Sorry to keep checking - is it OK to cover the paving slabs with a layer of 3 inch bricks and build the oven on this? Hope so! Jude

You'll need some insulation between the floor and the slabs, oterwise the slabs will wick the heat away from your oven. You could use 3 -4" of vermicrete, insulating board or celcon blocks. Take a look at some of the build threads and you'll be able to see all of these options in use.
Personally, I used vermicrete, mainly because it was easy to pour into the shape of the oven.

You can.....of course do this, but please take on board Faz's comment. That insulation layer in between cold slab and hearth, will make a world of difference when operating the oven.
Myself......I use thermolite blocks, mainly because they're cheap and you can cut them to shape with a handsaw......same horse different jockey.......same result.
